British Gas Smart Energy Expert to the Rescue!

Smart Energy Expert Ben comes to the aid of an injured cyclist

The swift action of one of our British Gas Smart Energy Experts helps an injured cyclist.

Last week one on our Smart Energy Expert's Ben Phoenix-Langston had his first aid skills and quick thinking put to the test and literally saved a life.

Ben was on his way to his next Smart Metering customer when he approached the scene of a serious accident involving a cyclist.

Ben's previous military training in the Royal Army Dental Core kicked in, and after finding a safe place to pull over, Ben assessed the scene and grabbed his first aid kit. The cyclist, also called Ben, lay badly injured on the road behind a Ford Galaxy with a smashed rear window.

On assessing his injuries, Ben applied dressings to his cuts and compression to a deep cut on his neck, near to the carotid artery. Ben made the important decision not to move the injured cyclist and requested that an ambulance be called immediately. Ben also requested that the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident and his passenger control the traffic around the incident until the emergency services arrived. When the emergency services did arrive, Ben remained calm and assisted the police and ambulance service to transfer the cyclist onto a spinal board and trolley.

Following the accident, the wife of the cyclist contacted Ben to explain her husband was recovering well in hospital and mentioned that the doctors stated that had it not been for Ben's quick action and first aid knowledge; her husband may not be here today.

Well done Ben, an amazing story we are all proud of you.
