Improving and expanding the city’s transport network is central to driving economic growth, jobs and housing in our city. And the work we do at TfL has a direct impact on the lives of millions of people – every single day.

Our remit is broad. It includes the Tube, London Overground, Docklands Light Railway, TfL Rail, London Trams, London River Services, London Dial-A-Ride, Victoria Coach Station, Emirates Air Line, Santander Cycles and buses.

We also regulate taxis and the private hire trade, run the Congestion Charging scheme, manage the city’s 580km red route road network and operate all of the Capital’s 6,200 traffic signals. And we work to ensure a safe environment for all road users.

We’re pioneers in integrated ticketing and in providing information to help people move around London. Oyster is the world’s most popular smartcard, and contactless payment is making travel even more convenient. Real-time travel information is provided by us and through third parties, who use our data to power their apps and other services.

We are currently in the process of updating our apprenticeship website and will be open for applications on 7 January. We are looking for approx. 170 apprentices in 2016 over about 18 schemes so there is a scheme available to suit most!!

TfL Apprentices – Influencing the life of London

Applications open Thursday 7 January 2016 – You will need to upload a copy of your exams certificates with your application (including UK NARIC translation of any qualifications gained overseas). We cannot progress your application without your certificates, please ensure you know where they are in preparation, if you need replacement certificates, please contact the relevant exam board as soon as possible as the process can take several weeks.

Although the requirements differ for each scheme you will need to have at least three GCSEs at A*-C grade.

Graduate scheme roles

What we're looking for:

Each year, we take on graduates from a wide range of degree disciplines. Each role has its own set of technical skills and academic qualifications, but more general competencies and behaviours include

  • Motivational fit - you should demonstrate an understanding of the business challenges we face in the area you've applied for and across the organisation as a whole
  • Customer service skills - an ability to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers
  • Management and innovation skills - You should be able to respond to, manage, or lead business improvements and change to meet strategic priorities
  • Commercial thinking - an ability to view situations from a commercial perspective and understand how important cost and efficiency is to our business
  • Planning and organisational abilities - you should instinctively take the initiative in situations and be responsible for your own (or others') time, schedule, resources and circumstances to meet objectives
  • Results focus - delivering business/performance results according to time, budget and quality is essential
  • Good attitude to self-improvement - recognising when and how to keep your technical and specialist skills up-to-date so you can be an authoritative source of expertise for your colleagues

For all our schemes, you'll be contracted to work a minimum 35-hour week, although any placement in an operational environment may involve varied hours, including weekend working and shifts, dependent on your role. Office-based placements will generally involve working during usual office hours.

  • There are five steps to the application process - make sure you know what to expect
  • We don't consider UCAS points, so only submit your degree grades

Student Placements

If you're still studying, coming to work with us during the summer (or longer) is great work experience and puts you in a good position to get on to our graduate scheme. It may even lead to joining us permanantly in the future.

For students, our placements fall into two categories:

  • The summer placement - usually lasts 12 weeks and gives you the chance to get real, hands-on experience
  • A Year in Industry - a 12-month placement, ideally for sandwich course students, who then return to their final year of studies

Throughout both placements, you'll be paid for working full-time and get free travel on our entire network. If you want to apply for one of our graduate schemes when you've finished your studies, you may have the opportunity to be fast tracked. We'll discuss the options with you before you return to university.

Salary and Benefits

If you buy annual travel tickets to travel outside our network, we'll give you 75% of it back. We can also provide an interest-free loan to buy an annual ticket which we'll then recover from your salary over a period of 10 months

  • Salary - £16,067 (pro rata'd for summer placements)
  • Pension options
  • Holiday - 30 days, as well as standard public holidays (pro rata'd for summer placements)
  • Free travel - A free Oyster card for you, and someone you live with, to use on our entire network
