Local Government Association

Type: Public
Founded: 1997

The LGA is the national voice of local government. We work with councils to support, promote and improve local government. We are a politically-led, cross-party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We aim to influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils so they are able to deliver local solutions to national problems.

The Workforce team at the LGA works with councils and their partners to help create a workforce able to respond to major changes within the public sector. This includes helping councils to develop a flexible and productive workforce, ensuring affordable and flexible pay and conditions for local government employees and working with different public sector organisations to develop innovative ways to deliver services to local people.

Councils remain exciting, rewarding and innovative places for young people to work. That is why the LGA has funded the creation of a Local Government World platform within the website that will showcase the range of careers and opportunities that councils have to offer.

Councils are responsible for providing healthy, safe and vibrant places for us to live, work, shop, learn, socialise and exercise. Councils make a positive difference to the quality of all our lives which means people who work for councils know that what they do directly benefits some or all of their neighbours, family, friends, local shops, work colleagues, community groups, vulnerable people and children. That’s a great responsibility but a fantastic opportunity to do something rewarding every day.
